With Euro 2012 coming to a close, it is time to take a look and see how some teams may or may not have been affected. With a continental final counting for so much in the FIFA rankings, a good or bad few games could really have a harsh effect on teams. A team that will surely suffer is the Netherlands, but is important not to undervalue such a strong squad. Likewise, the strong effort from Portugal may give them a little extra value.
One team which to me appears to be a little bit undervalued is the England squad. Although they were bounced in the quarters by finalists Italy, the game did go to kicks. In addition, they beat Sweden, drew with France and beat Ukraine on their home soil. All of these are impressive results. They get a tough test against Italy again at home before starting World Cup 2014 qualification at Moldova. They should not have too much difficulty getting off to a good start, and I wouldn’t mind backing them.
Another team to pair England with would be Russia. The Russians couldn’t break through against a tough Greece side, but it certainly wasn’t for lack of effort. They were struck with a bit of bad luck, but their 4-1 trouncing of Czech Republic as well as a 3-0 victory over Italy in Euro warmups are certainly something to keep in mind. The Russians should make easy work of Northern Ireland in Moscow.
